#Drive 2011 analysis driver
The second use of non-diegetic sound within the film is the title track Wrong Floor – Cliff Martinez which is used when Driver pushes Irene to one side after spotting the gun on the man in the tan suit. The same sound is repeated in the low-angle shot revealing the gun. Irene walks into the lift accompanied by a non-diegetic menacing sound. The first time sound becomes key in the scene is when the man in the tan suit is introduced. The soundtrack of the film is reminiscent of 80s music with its electric-synthesiser funk feel. The key ones are non-diegetic sound, diegetic sound which is often exaggerated throughout this scene and parallel sound. Sound There are several sound processes used in this excerpt. This makes the audience feel uncomfortable as the empty space is awkward and implies something bad is going to happen. Once or twice there is asymmetrical composition used as when Irene steps into the elevator leaving Driver to stare at the man in the tan suit. This is a cinematic process where props are exaggerated by the shot type. Close ups are used to show the raw emotion between the two characters as well as create tension as when Driver notices the gun the man is carrying hidden under his jacket. It also allows to build on the suspicion Driver has towards the man in the tan suit. These create a claustrophobic atmosphere for the audience. Once in the elevator low angle shots are used. The mid-shot reveal this character to the audience and state his importance. The second time this happens is when the man in the tan suit is introduced into the scene. The examples of this are when Irene slaps Driver we cut to a mid-shot to show the momentum of the action. Very rarely we cut to mid-shots which break continuity. Cinematography Frequently used in this scene are over-shoulder shots and close ups. Having given an overview of the scene, I am now going to highlight the micro-elements within this scene, looking in particular at the mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound and editing. Driver turns around, looks at Irene as the elevator doors close. The elevator reaches the parking lot and Irene steps out of the elevator standing there in complete shock. Irene watches in horror as the attack becomes more frenzied. He then throws the stunned man to the floor where is repeatedly stamps on his face. As the kiss breaks the man in the tan suit reaches for his gun but Driver is aware of this and quickly slams the man’s face into the side of the elevator. He slowly pushes Irene to the side and passionately kisses her. Driver, out of the corner of his eye, spots that the man in the tan suit is carrying a gun. There is a tense silence as the elevator starts to descend.

Driver pauses and looks at the man before entering the lift himself. The man in the suit states that he has the wrong floor at which point Irene enters the lift. As they both stand in awkward silence the elevator door opens to reveal a man wearing a tan suit. As he tries his best to explain the situation, Irene in her sorrow and anger slaps him across the face. At the beginning of our scene our protagonist is confessing to Irene what really happened to her husband, who had just been killed holding up a pawn shop in which Driver was his accomplice.

Our nameless protagonist, only known as the Driver played by Ryan Gosling, Irene (Carey Mulligan), man in Tan Suit (Jeff Wolfe). The excerpt is towards the end of the film and the majority of the actions take place in an elevator. In this assignment I will be Iooking at an excerpt from Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 film ‘Drive’.
